His words at the end of the verse contain profound lessons:

“And turn to Allah in repentance, all of you, O believers, so that you may succeed.”

Among these is that His command to all believers to repent in this context draws attention to the fact that no believer is entirely free of some of these sins: failing to lower the gaze, guard one’s chastity, and refrain from displaying adornment, and other related matters. Some commit little of this, while others commit much. As stated in the hadith:

“There is no descendant of Adam who has not sinned or contemplated a sin, except John, son of Zechariah.”

This arises only from looking. In the Sunan collections, the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is reported to have said:

“All the children of Adam frequently sin, and the best of those who sin are those who repeatedly repent.”

In the Sahīh, Abū Dharr reports that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Allah Most High says: ‘My servants, you sin by night and by day, and I forgive all sins without concern. So seek My forgiveness, and I will forgive you.’”

In the two Sahīhs, Ibn ʿAbbās said: “I have seen nothing that more closely resembles minor lapses than what Abū Hurayrah reported: ‘The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “Allah has decreed for the son of Adam his share of fornication, which he will inevitably commit. The fornication of the eyes is looking, and the fornication of the tongue is speaking.”’” The hadith continues to its end.

It also contains the words:

“And the soul
