Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

My father narrated to us: Ibrāhīm ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Ya‘qūb narrated to us, saying: Abū al-Yamān narrated to us: Abū Mahdī Sa‘īd ibn Sinān narrated to us, from Abū al-Zāhiriyyah, from Kathīr ibn Murrah, from Ibn ‘Umar, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“The first glance is unintentional, the second deliberate, and the third scrutiny. A believer’s looking at a woman’s beauty is a poisoned arrow from the arrows of Iblīs. Whoever refrains from it out of fear of Allah and hope for what is with Him, Allah Most High will reward him with worship whose delight he experiences.”

Abū Ja‘far al-Kharā’itī narrated it in Kitāb I‘tilāl al-Qulūb (The Book of Ailments of the Hearts): ‘Alī ibn Harb narrated to us: Ishāq ibn ‘Abd al-Wāhid narrated to us: Hushaym narrated to us: ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Ishāq narrated to us, from Muhārib ibn Dithār, from Jibillah, from Hudhayfah ibn al-Yamān, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Looking at a woman is a poisoned arrow from the arrows of Iblīs. Whoever refrains from it out of fear of Allah, Allah will reward him with faith whose sweetness he finds in his heart.”

Abū Muhammad al-Khallāl also narrated it through ‘Abd al-Rahmān ibn Ishāq, from al-Nu‘mān ibn Sa‘d, from ‘Alī; this version also mentions the arrow.

Abū Nu‘aym also narrated it: ‘Abd Allah ibn Muhammad—that is, Abū al-Shaykh—narrated to us: Ibn ‘Afīr narrated to us, saying: Shu‘ayb ibn Salamah narrated to us: ‘Ismah ibn Muhammad narrated to us, from Mūsā—that is, Ibn ‘Uqbah—from al-Qāsim ibn Muhammad, from ‘Ā’ishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“No servant restrains his gaze from a woman’s beauty, though he could look at her if he wished, without Allah placing in his heart worship whose sweetness he experiences.”

Ibn Abī al-Fawāris also narrated through
