From this, the distinction in hearing and sight between faith and its effects and disbelief and its effects becomes clear, as does the distinction between the righteous believer and the disbeliever and evildoer.
Believers hear accounts of the people of faith and behold them with knowledge and understanding, love and reverence for them, their accounts, and their legacy—just as the Companions saw the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and heard what he conveyed from Allah. The disbeliever and hypocrite, however, hear and see with hatred and ignorance, as Allah Most High says:
“Those who disbelieve almost make you stumble with their looks when they hear the Reminder.”
He also says:
“But when a decisive surah is sent down and fighting is mentioned in it, you see those in whose hearts is disease looking at you like someone swooning at the approach of death.”
And He says:
“They were unable to hear, nor did they see.”
And He says:
“So they became blind and deaf. Then Allah turned to them in forgiveness, but then many of them became blind and deaf again.”
Concerning the believers, Allah Most High says:
“And those who, when reminded of their Lord’s signs, do not turn a deaf ear and a blind eye to them.”
Concerning the disbelievers, He says:
“Why, then, do they turn away from the Reminder?”
There are very many verses on this subject. Likewise, looking upon the adornments of worldly life is a trial. Allah Most High says:
“Do not extend your gaze towards what We have granted some groups of them to enjoy—the splendour of worldly life—by which We test them. Your Lord’s provision is better and more lasting.”
In Surah al-Tawbah, He says:
“So let neither their wealth nor their children impress you.”
The verse continues. He also says:
“Tell the believing men to lower their gaze.”
The verse continues. And He says:
“And do not let your eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornment of worldly life.”
And He says:
“Do they not look
