Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

“It is He who takes your souls by night and knows what you have earned by day, then awakens you during it, so that an appointed term may be fulfilled. Then to Him is your return, and He will inform you of what you used to do.”

“He is the Subduer, above His servants, and He sends guardians over you until, when death comes to one of you, Our messengers take his soul, never neglecting their duty.”

“Then they are returned to Allah, their true Master.”

And He says:

“Or has he not been informed of what is in the scriptures of Moses,”

“And of Abraham, who fulfilled his duty:”

“That no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another,”

“And that a person will have only what he has striven for,”

“And that his striving will be seen,”

“Then he will be recompensed for it with the fullest recompense,”

“And that to your Lord is the final destination.”

And He says:

“Whether We show you some of what We promise them or take you in death, to Us is their return; then Allah is Witness to what they do.”

Whatever path a servant follows, his return and ultimate destination are to Allah. He must inevitably meet Allah:

“So that He may recompense those who do evil for what they have done and reward those who do good with the best.”

The verses discussed earlier, however, are intended to show that the way of truth and guidance—the straight path—is the way whose followers attain happiness and, through it, receive Allah’s protection, mercy, and honor. Allah, rather than Satan, thus becomes their protector. This is the way of those who worship Allah alone and obey His messengers. Hence He says:

“Indeed, upon Us is guidance.”

“And upon Allah is the direction of the way.”

“He said, ‘This is a straight path upon Me.’”

Thus guidance, the right course, and the straight path point only to worshipping Him and obeying Him—not to disobeying Him and obeying Satan.
