Surah al-Ra‘d (Thunder)

Shaykh al-Islām—may Allah Most High have mercy on him—said:

Section on the words of Allah Most High:

“And they have ascribed partners to Allah. Say, ‘Name them.’”

One interpretation is: Give them true names whose meanings entitle them to be partners with Him and to be worshipped. If you cannot, your claim is disproved.

Another interpretation is: If you call them gods, then call them by a name belonging to God, such as the Creator or the Provider. If these names are falsely applied to them, then so too is the name “gods.” Many commentators have touched upon its meaning, yet they have neither healed the ailing nor quenched the thirsty, even though what they have said is correct.

Reflecting on what precedes and follows this verse will reveal its true meaning to you. For He, glorified is He, says:

“Is He who watches over every soul and what it has earned…”
