that. He even offered funeral prayers for the hypocrites before being forbidden to do so, hoping that they would be forgiven, until Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed:

“It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists,”

through to His words:

“tenderhearted and forbearing.”

Concerning the hypocrites, He said:

“And never offer funeral prayer for any of them who dies,”

to the end of the verse. He also said:

“It makes no difference to them whether you seek forgiveness for them or do not seek forgiveness for them: Allah will never forgive them.”

If, then, he offered funeral prayers for the hypocrites and sought forgiveness for them, hoping that they would be forgiven, before learning this, this explains why scholars permitted the transmission, concerning promises and warnings, of hadiths not known to be false, even if their chains of transmission were weak. This differs from matters of commands and prohibitions, in which only reports established as true may be relied upon. For, concerning promises and warnings, if a report could be true and could also prove false, it is impermissible to deny it—especially without knowledge—just as it is impermissible to affirm its authenticity categorically without knowledge, since there is nothing objectionable in it.

People’s origins (1). The wording specifies the promise and warning. It is therefore impermissible to prevent this by prohibiting transmission of the hadith if it could be true, for that would invalidate something true, which is impermissible. This is why the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“Relate accounts from the Children of Israel
