my heart.’” Al-Bukhārī omitted the words “to doubt,” fearing that some people might misunderstand them.

It is well known that Abraham was a believer, as Allah tells us:

“‘Do you not believe?’ He replied, ‘Yes.’”

Yet he sought reassurance for his heart, as he said:

“But to reassure my heart.”

The Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, called this difference between faith and reassurance “doubt” in connection with the raising of the dead. The same applies to the promise of victory in this world: a person may believe in it, yet his heart may become unsettled and lack reassurance. This lack of reassurance may take the form of a suspicion that he has been lied to. There is thus reason to think that such doubt belongs to the same category.

These matters do not undermine obligatory faith, even though some of them may be sinful. The Prophets, peace be upon them, are protected from being left uncorrected in such matters, just as they are concerning their actions, in accordance with the established principles of the Sunnah and hadith.

The accounts of these matters contain a lesson for those who believe in the Prophets, for they will inevitably face trials greater than these. They should not despair when tested in this way, but should know that those better than themselves underwent such trials and that the outcome was good. Let the doubter attain certainty, the sinner repent, and the believers grow stronger in faith. These accounts thus enable people to follow the Prophets’ example properly, as Allah says:

“Indeed, in the Messenger of Allah you have an excellent example, for whoever hopes in Allah and the Last Day.”
