And the second is that it must not be opposed with specious arguments, whether based on opinion or transmitted reports. Allah Most High says, in His commands to the Children of Israel—which also contain a lesson for us:

“Believe in what I have sent down, confirming what is with you, and do not be the first to disbelieve in it. Do not exchange My verses for a small price, and fear Me alone.”

“Do not mix truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know.”

The truth brought by the Messenger—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—must neither be concealed, nor mixed with falsehood, nor opposed with anything else. Allah Most High says:

“Follow what has been sent down to you from your Lord, and do not follow other protectors besides Him. How little you take heed!”

He Most High also says:

“Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allah, or says, ‘Revelation has come to me,’ when nothing has been revealed to him, or one who says, ‘I will send down the like of what Allah has sent down’?”

These three categories are the enemies of the messengers. When one of them brings something contrary to the truth, he either says, “Allah has sent it down to me,” thereby inventing a lie about Allah; or he says that it has been revealed to him, without naming who revealed it; or he says, “I composed it myself, and I send down the like of what Allah has sent down.” Thus, he either attributes it to Allah, attributes it to himself, or attributes it to no one. These three categories belong to the devils among mankind and jinn who inspire one another with embellished speech in order to deceive. Allah Most High says:

“The Messenger said, ‘My Lord, my people have indeed abandoned this Quran.’”

“Thus We have appointed for every prophet an enemy from among the wicked. But your Lord suffices as a guide and helper.”
