Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

distinctive of a particular kind is evidence of that kind, for it necessarily entails it; everything that entails something else is evidence of it. Such are all the signs of the prophets, which are distinctive of their kind. This Quran is distinctive of their kind and, among them, of their Seal: no one else could have brought it. This was clear proof that Allah sent it down and that it was revealed with Allah’s knowledge. It is He who declared what it declares and commanded what it commands, as He says:

“But Allah bears witness to what He has revealed to you; He has revealed it with His knowledge,”

to the end of the verse.

Establishing the Messenger’s mission entails establishing Allah’s oneness and that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah: first, because the Messenger proclaimed this; and second, because none but Allah can produce this Quran, for some knowledge is known only to Allah. There are other forms of proof within it, as has been explained at length and pointed out elsewhere. This applies particularly to this surah, which contains clear exposition and demonstrations of inimitability whose full extent only Allah knows. It also contains admonitions, wisdom, encouragements, and warnings whose true worth only Allah can measure.

The “purpose here” is to discuss His words:

“Is one who stands upon clear evidence from his Lord and is followed by a witness”

The questioner asked about its interpretation and mentioned the considerable disagreement about it in the Quran commentaries, explaining that this disagreement leaves the student even less able to discern the intended meaning through which guidance and right direction are attained. Allah Most High sent down the Quran so that people would be guided by it, not so that they would dispute over it. Guidance can only be attained when its meanings are understood. Thus, if disagreement arises that contradicts those meanings and cannot be reconciled
