Satan, and the person’s own soul accepts it from Satan, who makes something seem attractive to it, so that it obeys him in that matter. Not everything that comes from Satan is something for which the servant is punished, though it deprives him of certain good deeds. Forgetfulness, for example, comes from Satan, as do wet dreams, drowsiness during remembrance and prayer, and swooning during remembrance. The servant incurs no sin for what overwhelms him involuntarily, provided it was neither intentional on his part nor caused by a sin.
Thus, His words,
“Indeed, I stand upon clear evidence from my Lord,”
and similar statements mentioned earlier belong to this category. The same applies to His words:
“That is because those who disbelieve follow falsehood, while those who believe follow the truth from their Lord.”
For believers affirm what Allah has declared and carry out what Allah has commanded, whether imparted initially or conveyed to them, as with the Quran. There is also the saying:
“Allah sent down trust into the very roots of men’s hearts.”
This trust descends into the hearts of believers from His light and guidance. These are religious good deeds and true religious knowledge, beneficial in this world and the Hereafter. This is faith: the gracious gift of the Benefactor and the greatest of blessings.
As for His words,
“Whatever good befalls you is from Allah,”
this includes all worldly blessings, such as well-being, provision, and victory. These are good things with which Allah tests the servant, just as He tests him with afflictions: will he be grateful or not, and will he be patient or not?
As the Most High says:
“We tested them with good things and bad,”
and:
“We test you with evil and good as a trial,”
and:
“As for man, when his Lord tests him…”
and the verses that follow.
