for it. Thus, in each verse He mentions what is appropriate to it of fear and hope. Blessed is He who sent down His words as a healing for what is in the hearts.

Regarding His words, Exalted is He:

“Indeed, He does not love the transgressors,”

it has been said that this means He does not love those who transgress in supplication, such as someone who asks for what is not fitting for him, including the ranks of the prophets and other such things. Abū Dāwūd narrated in his Sunan that ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mughaffal heard his son saying, “O Allah, I ask You for the white palace on the right side of Paradise when I enter it.” He said, “My son, ask Allah for Paradise and seek refuge in Him from the Fire, for I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, say: ‘There will be people in this community who transgress in purification and supplication.’”

According to this interpretation, transgression in supplication sometimes consists of asking for something one is not permitted to request, such as assistance in committing forbidden acts.

At other times, it consists of asking for something Allah will not do, such as asking Him to keep one alive until the Day of Resurrection, or to remove the necessities of human existence, such as the need for food and drink. It also includes asking Him to disclose His unseen to one, to make one infallible, or to grant one a child without a wife, and similar requests that constitute transgression. Allah loves neither such requests nor those who make them. Transgression has also been interpreted as raising one’s voice in supplication.

Yet the verse is broader than all of this; even if transgression in supplication is intended
