The hadith also contains other indications that demonstrate the falsity of their doctrine.
The hadith is true, just as the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, stated. For Allah’s friend, through his perfect love for Allah and obedience to Him, comes to perceive and act for Allah and through Allah. Whatever he hears that the Real loves, he loves; whatever he hears that the Real hates, he hates. Whatever he sees that the Real loves, he loves; whatever he sees that the Real hates, he hates. His hearing and sight come to possess a light by which he distinguishes truth from falsehood, as the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said in the hadith whose authenticity is agreed upon:
“O Allah, place light in my heart, light in my sight, light in my hearing, light to my right, light to my left, light above me, light beneath me, light before me, and light behind me; and grant me light.”
Allah’s friend is in such accord with Allah that what is loved, hated, commanded, forbidden, and the like becomes the same for both. Thus, what the Real loves becomes what he loves; what the Real hates becomes what he hates; what the Real commands becomes what he commands; the Real’s friend becomes his friend, and the Real’s enemy becomes his enemy. Indeed, when one created being loves another with complete love, something of this kind arises between them, to the point that one may feel pain at the other’s pain and pleasure at the other’s pleasure. Hence the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“The believers, in their mutual love, mercy, and compassion, are like a single body: when one limb suffers, the rest of the body responds with fever and sleeplessness.”
Thus, a believer is pleased by what pleases the believers and distressed by what distresses them. Whoever is not like this is not one of them.
