accepts a bribe, he listens to false testimony and fraudulent claims, thus becoming an avid listener to falsehood, a devourer of unlawful gain, and a speaker of sinful words. For this reason, He gave His Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, the choice of judging between them or declining to do so, because their aim is not to hear and accept the truth unconditionally. Rather, they listen to whatever accords with their desires, even if it is false. The same applies to scholars who invent false reports.
