Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Hudhayfah—may Allah be pleased with him—also reported in the authentic hadith narrated by Muslim:

“He bowed for about as long as he had stood, saying during his bowing, ‘Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent. Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent.’ He also mentioned that he prostrated for about as long as he had stood, saying during his prostration, ‘My Lord, forgive me. My Lord, forgive me.’”

He explicitly stated in the authentic hadith:

“He prolonged his bowing and prostration for as long as it took to recite al-Baqarah, al-Nisā’ and Āl ‘Imrān.”

For he had recited all these surahs while standing. He also mentioned:

“He would say, ‘Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent. Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent. Glory be to my Lord, the Most High. Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.’”

It is thus clear that, by repeating the wording twice, he intended repetition in general, not restriction to two occurrences. For “two” is the first number indicating multiplicity. By mentioning this first number, he meant that the Prophet repeated these words rather than saying them only once. Thus, “doubling” denotes repetition, and repetition may involve different categories.

There is no mere repetition in the Quran; rather, every passage necessarily conveys benefits. Thus, “resembling one another” applies to corresponding passages that are alike, while “reiterated” applies to different types. Reiteration may also occur in passages that resemble one another: that is, a particular meaning is repeated in the Quran to convey further benefits.
