Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

If His words,

“On that Day, intercession will be of no benefit,”

belong to this category, they cannot be adduced as proof that the intercessor benefits from intercession. Even if He does not honour him, the intercessor would be among those who benefit from intercession. In the other verse,

“Intercession is of no benefit with Him except for those to whom He gives permission,”

this includes people from both groups.

However, it may be said that the implied meaning is: intercession is of no benefit with Him except for someone on whose behalf He has permitted intercession, so that another is permitted to intercede for him. Permission would thus apply to both groups, while the benefit would be for the person receiving intercession, as in one of the two interpretations. Alternatively, the meaning is: it benefits only those to whom He gives permission, from either group. Just as permission applies to both groups, so too does the benefit. The intercessor benefits from intercession, and his benefit may be greater than that of the person for whom he intercedes. Hence the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said in an authentic hadith:

“Intercede, and you will be rewarded. Allah decrees through the words of His Prophet whatever He wills.”

Thus, among the greatest honours Allah bestows upon His servant Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, is the intercession reserved exclusively for him. This is the Praiseworthy Station for which the first and the last generations will praise him.

On this interpretation, there is no need to understand anything as omitted from the verse. Rather, its meaning would be:
