He was also asked:

What do the esteemed scholars, the leaders of the religion and guides of the Muslims—may Allah be pleased with them all—say about the statements contained in “The Bezels of Wisdom” and similar statements which plainly indicate their speaker’s belief that the Lord and the servant are one and the same, with no distinction between them, and that nothing else exists? Examples include the poetic line:

“He and I are one; there is nothing else with us.”

And likewise:

“I am the one I love, and the one I love is me.”

And:

“If I am Laylā and Laylā is me.”

Another example is the saying: “If people knew the Truth, they would see neither a worshipper nor an object of worship.”

The substance of these statements is found neither in the Book of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, nor in the Sunnah, nor in the words of the rightly guided caliphs and the righteous predecessors.

Those who make such statements claim to love Allah, glorified and exalted. Yet Allah Most High says:

“Say, ‘If you love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you.’”
