the tree, their nakedness became apparent to them, and they began covering themselves with leaves from Paradise. Their Lord called out to them, ‘Did I not forbid you that tree and tell you that Satan is a clear enemy to you?’”
“They said, ‘Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves. If You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.’”
He also says:
“Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance. Indeed, He is the Accepter of repentance, the Most Merciful.”
Allah Most High says concerning the believers whose prophet was killed:
“How many a prophet fought with many followers beside him! They did not lose heart because of what befell them in Allah’s cause, nor did they weaken or submit. And Allah loves the patient.”
“Their only words were, ‘Our Lord, forgive us our sins and our excesses in our affairs, make our feet firm, and grant us victory over the disbelieving people.’”
“So Allah gave them the reward of this world and the excellent reward of the Hereafter. And Allah loves those who do good.”
His words, “was killed,” mean that the prophet was killed. This is the more correct of the two interpretations. His words, “with many followers beside him,” constitute a clause in the predicate position, qualifying the prophet—one qualification following another. That is: how many a prophet who had many followers was killed, while they were not killed with him.
For the meaning would then have been that he was killed while they were with him. What is intended is that he had many followers and, in general terms, that he was killed. Those followers “did not lose heart because of what befell them in Allah’s cause, nor did they weaken or submit.”
