And anyone who seeks to appoint a liar as a witness concerning people will not succeed. Likewise, anyone who seeks to make an ignorant person a teacher and issuer of religious rulings for people, an incapable coward a fighter defending them, or a fool who knows nothing a governor over people or a keeper of animals—such things bring corruption into the world. They may even be impossible, like trying to make stones float on the surface of water like ships or rise into the sky like the wind, and other such things.
Foul souls are therefore unfit to dwell in pure Paradise, where no foulness exists. That would cause corruption or be impossible. Rather, if a soul contains foulness, it is purified and refined until it becomes fit to dwell in Paradise. Thus, in the Sahīh, Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“When the believers have escaped the Fire—that is, crossed the Bridge—they will stop on a bridge between Paradise and the Fire. Redress will then be exacted from some on behalf of others for wrongs committed between them in this world. Once they have been refined and purified, they will be permitted to enter Paradise.”
