Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Thus, when he failed to do what he was created for, innately disposed toward, and commanded to do—namely, knowing Allah alone and worshipping Him alone—he was punished for that by Satan making his acts of associating partners with Allah and committing sins seem appealing to him. The Most High said to Satan:

“Go! Whoever among them follows you, Hell will surely be your recompense—an ample recompense.”

Then, later in the passage:

“Indeed, you have no authority over My servants.”

The Most High also said:

“Indeed, he has no authority over those who believe and put their trust in their Lord.”

“His authority is only over those who take him as an ally and those who, through him, associate partners with Allah.”

The Most High also said:

“Indeed, when those who fear Allah are touched by a temptation from Satan, they remember, and at once they see clearly.”

“But their brothers draw them further into error, and they do not desist.”

It has thus become clear that sincere devotion to Allah protects against Satan’s domination and against the allegiance to Satan that brings punishment. As the Most High said:

“Thus it was, so that We might turn evil and immorality away from him. Indeed, he was one of Our chosen servants.”

When a servant devotes his religion sincerely to his Lord, this prevents him from acting contrary to that devotion and prevents Satan from causing him to do so. But when he does not devote his religion sincerely to his Lord and fails to do what he was created for and innately disposed toward, he is punished for that. And part of his punishment was:
