In the Quran, Allah Most High draws attention to His signs that attest to His power and lordship, to His signs that manifest His blessings and kindness toward His servants, and to His signs that reveal His wisdom. These are all inseparably connected. Everything He has created is a blessing and evidence of His power and wisdom.
Yet the blessing of provision and the benefits derived from food, drink, dwellings, and clothing are apparent to everyone. Hence, they are cited as evidence, as in Surah al-Nahl, which is also called the Surah of Blessings, as Qatādah and others have stated.
Accordingly, many people say that praise is broader than gratitude in terms of its grounds, since praise may be offered for a blessing or for something other than a blessing. Gratitude, however, is broader in its forms, since it may be expressed through the heart, the tongue, and the hand.
If, then, every created thing contains a blessing, praise can only be offered for a blessing. Praise be to Allah in every circumstance, for there is no circumstance He decrees that is not a blessing for His servants. This, however, is understood only by those who recognize the blessings contained in created things. The Jahmiyyah and the Jabriyyah are far removed from this understanding.
