speech.”
And Allah Most High says:
“Glorify the name of your Lord, the Most High,
who created and proportioned,
who determined and guided.”
And Allah Most High says:
“And We guided him to the two paths.”
Thus, within everyone there is something that calls for knowledge and love of the truth. His Lord has guided him to various kinds of knowledge through which he can attain happiness in this world and the Hereafter, and has placed a love for this within his natural disposition. Yet, through his ignorance and heedlessness, a person may turn away from seeking knowledge of what benefits him.
His failure to seek or desire this is a mere absence and is not attributed to Allah Most High. Thus, neither his lack of knowledge of the truth nor his lack of desire for good is attributed to Allah.
As explained earlier, however, will and movement are inseparable from the soul, for it possesses natural life. Yet its happiness and salvation are attained only by living a beneficial and complete life. Its natural life becomes a cause of its punishment: it is neither alive, enjoying life, nor dead, relieved of punishment. Allah Most High says:
“So remind, if the reminder benefits.
He who fears will heed the reminder,
but the most wretched will shun it—
he who will burn in the greatest Fire,
where he will neither die nor live.”
Recompense, then, is of the same nature as the deed. Since, in this world, he did not live the beneficial life for which he was created,
