Satan makes evil deeds seem appealing to the soul, urges it to commit them, and points out their attractive features—those that bring benefit rather than harm—just as Iblīs did with Adam and Eve, saying:
“O Adam, shall I direct you to the tree of immortality and a kingdom that never decays?”
“So they both ate from it, and their nakedness became apparent to them.”
“He said, ‘Your Lord only forbade you this tree to prevent you from becoming angels or becoming immortal.’”
For this reason, Allah Most High says:
“Whoever turns away from the remembrance of the Most Merciful, We appoint for him a devil who becomes his companion.”
“Indeed, they turn them away from the path, while they think they are rightly guided.”
Allah Most High also says:
“What of one whose evil deeds have been made appealing to him, so that he regards them as good?”
And Allah Most High says:
“Do not insult those they invoke besides Allah, lest they insult Allah in hostility, without knowledge. Thus We have made every community’s deeds appealing to them. Then to their Lord they will return, and He will inform them of what they used to do.”
His words, “We have made every community’s deeds appealing to them,” refer to this occurring through the angels, prophets, and believers making good seem appealing, and through the devils among jinn and mankind making evil seem appealing. Allah Most High says:
“Likewise, their partners have made the killing of their children seem appealing to many of the polytheists, to bring them to ruin and leave them confused about their religion.”
Thus, what fundamentally leads people into evil deeds is ignorance: not knowing that these deeds bring them harm outweighing any benefit, or believing that they bring them benefit outweighing any harm. This is why it was said by
