to return to disbelief—after Allah has rescued him from it—as much as he would hate to be thrown into the Fire.”
In the Sunan collections, al-Barā’ ibn ‘Āzib reports that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:
“The firmest bonds of faith are loving for Allah’s sake and hating for Allah’s sake.”
They also contain a report from Abū Umāmah that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:
“Whoever loves for Allah’s sake, hates for Allah’s sake, gives for Allah’s sake, and withholds for Allah’s sake has perfected his faith.”
In the Sahīh, Abū Sa‘īd al-Khudrī reports that the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said:
“Whoever among you sees a wrong, let him change it with his hand. If he cannot, then with his tongue. If he cannot, then with his heart. That is the weakest level of faith.”
Also in the Sahīh, in the hadith of Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet said, after mentioning the successors:
“Whoever strives against them with his hand is a believer. Whoever strives against them with his tongue is a believer. Whoever strives against them with his heart is a believer. Beyond that there is not even a mustard seed’s weight of faith.”
Allah Most High says:
“You have had an excellent example in Abraham and those with him, when they said to their people, ‘We disavow you and whatever you worship besides Allah. We reject you, and enmity and hatred have arisen between us and you forever, until you believe in Allah alone’—except for Abraham’s saying to his father, ‘I will surely ask forgiveness for you, but I can do nothing to protect you from Allah.’”
