as narrated by Ibn Mas‘ūd (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (may Allah bless him and grant him peace):
“Adhere to truthfulness, for truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. A man continues to speak the truth and earnestly pursue truthfulness until he is recorded with Allah as a man of truth. Beware of lying, for lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Fire. A man continues to lie and deliberately pursue falsehood until he is recorded with Allah as a habitual liar.”
Several passages in the Quran make clear that a second good deed may be part of the reward for the first. Likewise, a second evil deed may be part of the punishment for the first. Allah Most High says:
“If they had done what they were admonished to do, it would have been better for them and would have strengthened them in steadfastness. Then We would have granted them a great reward from Us, and We would have guided them to a straight path.”
Allah Most High also says:
“As for those who strive for Our sake, We will surely guide them to Our ways.”
And Allah Most High says:
“As for those who are killed in the way of Allah, He will never let their deeds go to waste. He will guide them and set their affairs right, and admit them to Paradise, which He has made known to them.”
And Allah Most High says:
“Then the outcome of those who did evil was the worst.”
And Allah Most High says:
“And a clear Book, through which Allah guides those who seek His pleasure to the ways of peace.”
And Allah Most High says:
“O you who believe, fear Allah and believe in His Messenger. He will grant you a double share of His mercy, provide you with a light by which to walk, and forgive you.”
And Allah Most High says:
“And in their inscription is guidance and mercy for those who fear their Lord.”
And Allah Most High says:
“This is a clear explanation for mankind, and guidance and admonition for the Allah-fearing.”
