Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

it is stated in the hadith:

“You will surely follow the ways of those who came before you.”

The Quran has made clear that evil deeds come from one’s own self. The gravest are denying the Creator, associating partners with Him, and seeking to be a partner to Him. Both of these have occurred.

Some have said, “There is no soul that does not contain what was in Pharaoh’s soul.” For when a person reflects and examines people’s circumstances, he sees how someone may hate his counterpart and that counterpart’s followers out of envy. This is what the Jews did when Allah sent someone calling to the same message to which Moses had called. For this reason, what Allah related about them resembles what He related about Pharaoh.
