In a report transmitted by Abū Yahyā al-Qattāt from Mujāhid, from Ibn ʿAbbās, and attributed to the Prophet:

“Whoever falls passionately in love, remains chaste, conceals it, and patiently endures, then dies, is a martyr.”

Abū Yahyā’s narrations are open to question. However, the meaning expressed in this report is supported by the Quran and Sunnah, for Allah has commanded a person to fear Him and be patient. Fearing Allah includes refraining from everything He has forbidden, whether a glance with the eyes, words spoken with the tongue, or movements of the hands and feet. Patience means refraining from complaining of one’s condition to anyone other than Allah, for this is gracious patience.

As for concealment, two things are meant by it:

The first is to conceal one’s distress and pain, and not complain to anyone other than Allah. Whenever a person complains to someone other than Allah, his patience is diminished. This is the higher of the two forms of concealment. Not everyone, however, can patiently sustain it; indeed, many people complain of what they are suffering. This takes two forms. If he complains to a physician versed in treating souls, seeking to treat his soul with the remedy of faith, he is like someone seeking a religious ruling, and this is good. If he complains to someone who will help him do what is forbidden, this is unlawful. If he complains to someone else for the relief that complaining brings—just as an afflicted person complains to others of his misfortune—without intending either to learn what will benefit him or to seek help in committing a sin, this diminishes his patience. It does not, however, necessarily make him sinful, unless accompanied by something forbidden, as when an afflicted person expresses resentful discontent.

The second is to conceal it by not speaking about it with people, because doing so involves
