Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

His making it clear to His servants, guiding them to it, and enabling them to know it. This is accomplished through His signs, for His signs are His indications and proofs through which His servants come to know what He declares and bears witness to, just as He has made His commands and prohibitions known to them through these signs. He is All-Knowing, All-Wise: what He communicates includes His commands and prohibitions, while His actions reveal His wisdom. Thus, when the prophets convey His words, His testimony and His spoken signs become known through them. He must also make known that the prophets are truthful in what they report from Him.

He has made this known through the signs with which He supported the prophets and demonstrated their truthfulness. He never sent a prophet without a sign establishing his truthfulness, for it is not valid to affirm his truthfulness on the basis of something that does not demonstrate it. As He said:

“We certainly sent Our messengers with clear proofs.”

That is, with clear signs.

He also said:

“We sent before you only men to whom We revealed—so ask the people of knowledge if you do not know—with clear proofs and scriptures. And We have sent down to you the Reminder so that you may explain to people what has been revealed to them, and so that they may reflect.”

He also said:

“Say: Messengers came to you before me with clear proofs and with what you have demanded.”

And He said:

“Messengers before you were also denied, though they came with clear proofs, scriptures, and the enlightening Book.”

In the two Sahīh collections, Abū Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, reports that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:

“There was no prophet who was not given signs of a kind that led people to believe. What I have been given, however, is revelation that Allah has revealed to me
