Shaykh al-Islām Abū al-ʿAbbās Taqī al-Dīn Ibn Taymiyyah—may Allah sanctify his soul and illuminate his grave—also said:

Section

On the words of the Most High:

“Whether you disclose what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it. Then He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. And Allah has power over all things.”

It is established in Sahīh Muslim, through al-ʿAlāʾ ibn ʿAbd al-Rahmān, from his father, from Abū Hurayrah, who said:

“When Allah revealed, ‘Whether you disclose what is within yourselves or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it,’ this weighed heavily upon the Prophet’s Companions. They came to the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace), knelt down, and said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, we have been charged with deeds within our capacity: prayer, fasting, jihad, and charity. But this verse has been revealed to you, and we cannot bear what it requires.’

“The Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: ‘Do you wish to say what the followers of the two Scriptures before you said: “We hear and disobey”? Say: “We hear and obey. Grant us Your forgiveness, our Lord; to You is the final return.”’

“When the people recited these words and their tongues grew accustomed to them, Allah revealed immediately thereafter: ‘The Messenger has believed
