al-Tafsīr. If, however, some of the meanings they mention are false, this falls into the first category: error in both the evidence and the conclusion drawn from it, since the meaning they intend is unsound.

If someone asks, “What are the best methods of interpreting the Quran?” the answer is:
The soundest method is to interpret the Quran through the Quran. What is stated generally in one place is explained in another, and what is presented briefly in one place is elaborated elsewhere. If this proves beyond you, then turn to the Sunnah, for it explains and clarifies the Quran.
Indeed, Imam Abū ‘Abd Allāh Muhammad ibn Idrīs al-Shāfi‘ī said: “Every ruling given by the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, was based on his understanding of the Quran.” Allah Most High says:
“Indeed, We have sent down to you the Book in truth so that you may judge between people by what Allah has shown you. And do not be an advocate for the treacherous.”
And He, Most High, says:
“And We have sent down to you the Reminder so that you may explain to people what has been sent down to them, and so that they may reflect.”
And He, Most High, says:
“We have sent down the Book to you only so that you may clarify for them that over which they have differed, and as guidance and mercy for people who believe.”
For this reason, the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said:
“Indeed, I have been given the Quran and its like along with it.”
He meant the Sunnah.
