Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

If someone says:

“By Your right, remove my selfhood from between us,”

meaning that he should set his own self aside, neither following his desires nor relying upon himself or his own might and strength, but acting for Allah rather than for his desires, and acting through Allah’s help and strength rather than his own might and strength—as Allah Most High says:

“You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help”—

then this meaning is true and praiseworthy.

This is like the account related of Abū Yazīd, who said: “I saw the Lord of Glory in a dream and said, ‘My God, what is the way to You?’ He replied, ‘Leave yourself behind and come.’” That is, abandon following your desires and relying upon yourself, so that your deeds are for Allah and you seek help from Allah, as Allah Most High says:

“So worship Him and put your trust in Him.”

The saying attributed to Ibn ‘Arabī:

“I swore by myself, and the one swearing was Allah,”

is likewise part of their heresy and falsehood. He made himself the one swearing by himself, and made Allah the one swearing; thus he is both the one who swears and the one sworn by. This resembles their saying: “He sent from himself to himself a messenger who was himself.” Thus he is the sender, the recipient, and the messenger.

Likewise, Ibn al-Fārid said in his poem Nazm al-Sulūk (The Ordering of the Spiritual Path):

“For her I establish my prayers at the station, … and witness in them that she has prayed to me.
We both are one worshipper, prostrating … to his own reality, in union, at every prostration.
