these are those who resemble Christian devotees and monks in many matters outside the law of Islam. Since they practised an innovated religion akin to that of the polytheists and the People of the Book, they believed what those people believe: that this is a sound religion, that it brings one closer to Allah, and that its adherents are Allah’s allies. For all groups of scholars and devotees among the followers of every religion believe (1).

هَؤُلَاءِ مَنْ يُشْبِهُ عُبَّادَ النَّصَارَى وَرُهْبَانَهُمْ فِي أُمُورٍ كَثِيرَةٍ خَارِجَةٍ عَنْ شَرِيعَةِ الْإِسْلَامِ فَلَمَّا كَانَ فِيهِمْ دِينٌ مُبْتَدَعٌ مِنْ جِنْسِ دِينِ الْمُشْرِكِينَ وَأَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ ظَنُّوا مَا يَظُنُّهُ أُولَئِكَ مِنْ أَنَّ هَذَا دِينٌ صَحِيحٌ وَأَنَّهُ دِينٌ يُقَرِّبُ إلَى اللَّهِ وَأَنَّ أَهْلَهُ أَوْلِيَاءُ اللَّهِ؛ فَإِنَّ جَمِيعَ طَوَائِفِ الْعُلَمَاءِ وَالْعُبَّادِ مِنْ جَمِيعِ أَهْلِ الْمِلَلِ يَظُنُّونَ
