Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

As for the two verses attributed to al-Hallāj:

“Glory to Him whose human nature was revealed
By the mystery of His divinity’s piercing radiance,
Until He appeared openly among His creation,
In the form of one who eats and drinks.”

In these verses he clearly expresses particular indwelling, as Christians teach concerning Christ. Abū Abd Allāh ibn Khafīf al-Shīrāzī used to defend al-Hallāj before discovering the truth about him. When he recited these two verses, he said:

“May Allah curse whoever said this.”

As for the statement that he also composed the following verse:

“People have formed beliefs concerning God;
I have embraced all that they believed.”

This verse is known as a verse by Ibn Arabī. If al-Hallāj had composed it before him and Ibn Arabī had quoted it, then attributing it to al-Hallāj is correct. It is, however, a contradictory and false statement. To combine contradictory beliefs is utterly unsound. Two propositions that contradict one another through negation and affirmation, such that the truth of one necessarily entails the falsity of the other, cannot both be true.

These people claim that spiritual unveiling establishes for them things that contradict plain reason. They maintain that both contradictories and contraries can hold together, and that whoever follows their path affirms what conflicts with reason and transmitted texts. There is no doubt that this is among the most unsound positions adopted by the sophists.
