Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

exalted is He:

“O company of jinn and humankind, did there not come to you messengers from among yourselves, relating My verses to you and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours? They will say, ‘We testify against ourselves.’ The worldly life deluded them, and they will testify against themselves that they were disbelievers.”

This comes after His words:

“And on the Day He gathers them all together: ‘O company of jinn, you have led many humans astray.’ Their allies among humankind will say, ‘Our Lord, we benefited from one another, and we have reached the term You appointed for us.’ He will say, ‘The Fire is your abode, where you will remain forever, except as Allah wills.’”

More than one of the early generations explained: “That is, you have seduced and led astray many humans.”

Al-Baghawī said:

Some said, “Humans benefited from the jinn through the false rumours, magic and soothsaying that the jinn conveyed to them, and through their making attractive to them the things they arranged and made readily accessible to them. The jinn benefited from humans through their obedience to them in the misguidance and sins they made attractive to them.” Muhammad ibn Kaʿb said, “It means their obeying one another and agreeing with one another.”

Ibn Abī Hātim related that al-Hasan al-Basrī said, “Their benefiting from one another consisted only in the jinn giving commands and humans carrying them out.” He also related that Muhammad ibn Kaʿb said, “It means companionship in this world.”

Ibn al-Sāʾib said, “Humans benefited from the jinn by seeking refuge with them. The jinn benefited from humans by saying, ‘We have taken humans captive along with the jinn, so that they have come to seek refuge with us.’ Thus they grew in their own estimation of their honour and greatness.” This is like His words:

“And there were men among humankind who sought refuge with men among the jinn, so they increased them in transgression.”
