And Shaykh al-Islām Ibn Taymiyyah—may Allah sanctify his soul—said:
As for “the letters,” are they created or uncreated? Disagreement over this is well known among the later generations. As for the early generations, none of them is reported to have said that the letters, wording, or recitation of the Quran are created, or anything implying this.
Indeed, it is established that several of them refuted anyone who said, “Our utterances of the Quran are created.” They said, “He is a Jahmite,” and some declared him an unbeliever. Some used the expression “the recitation of the Quran,” while others used “the letters.”
Among those from whom this is reliably established are Ahmad ibn Hanbal, Abū al-Walīd al-Jārūdī, an associate of al-Shāfi‘ī, Ishāq ibn Rāhawayh, al-Humaydī, Muhammad ibn Aslam al-Tūsī, Hishām ibn ‘Ammār, and Ahmad ibn Sālih al-Misrī.
