Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Most High:

“The Trustworthy Spirit has brought it down upon your heart, so that you may be one of the warners, in a clear Arabic tongue.”

As for His words, “Indeed, it is the word of a noble messenger,” He attributed it to the messenger because he conveyed and delivered it, not because he produced or originated any of it. For He, glorified be He, says in one of the two passages:

“Indeed, it is the word of a noble messenger. It is not the word of a poet—little do you believe! Nor is it the word of a soothsayer—little do you take heed! It is a revelation from the Lord of all worlds.”

The messenger here is Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. In the other passage, He says:

“Indeed, it is the word of a noble messenger, endowed with power and held in high esteem by the Lord of the Throne, obeyed there and trustworthy.”

The messenger here is Gabriel. Allah chooses messengers from among the angels and from among mankind. If its attribution to either of them meant that he had composed its Arabic wording or otherwise originated any part of it, these statements would contradict one another. For if one of them had composed it, the other would not have composed it.

Moreover, He said, “the word of a messenger”; He did not say “the word of an angel” or “of a prophet.” The term “messenger” indicates that he conveys it from the One who sent him, not that he originated any of it himself.

Furthermore, in His words, “Indeed, it is the word of a noble messenger,” the pronoun refers to the Quran.
