He also related, through two chains of transmission, from ‘Alī ibn Abī Tālib, may Allah be pleased with him, that they said to him on the day of Siffīn, “You appointed two men as arbiters?” He replied, “I appointed no created thing as arbiter; I appointed only the Quran.”
He also related from ‘Ikrimah, who said: “Ibn ‘Abbās was attending a funeral. When the deceased was placed in the burial niche, a man stood up and said, ‘O Allah, Lord of the Quran, forgive him.’ Ibn ‘Abbās rushed over to him and said, ‘Stop! The Quran is from Him.’”
It is also related from ‘Abd Allāh ibn Mas‘ūd that he said, “Whoever swears by the Quran is bound by an oath for every verse.” This is established from Ibn Mas‘ūd.
Sufyān ibn ‘Uyaynah said: “I heard ‘Amr ibn Dīnār say, ‘For seventy years I have known our teachers and the people to say: The Quran is the speech of Allah; from Him it originated, and to Him it will return.’” In another wording, they say, “The Quran is the speech of Allah, uncreated.”
Harb al-Kirmānī said: “Ishāq ibn Ibrāhīm—that is, Ibn Rāhawayh—narrated to us from Sufyān ibn ‘Uyaynah, from ‘Amr ibn Dīnār, who said: ‘I have known the people for seventy years. I met the Companions of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, and those who came after them, saying: Allah is the Creator, and everything besides Him is created, except the Quran, for it is the speech of Allah; from Him it came forth, and to Him it will return.’”
Ishāq related this from Ibn ‘Uyaynah. Either Ishāq heard it from him directly, or he heard it from one of his companions who related it from him.
It is also related from Ja‘far ibn Muhammad al-Sādiq—and this is well known from him—that they asked him about the Quran: “Is it a creator or is it created?” He replied, “It is neither a creator nor created; rather, it is the speech of Allah.” The same was related from al-Hasan al-Basrī, Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyānī, and Sulaymān
