and began to tremble. Abū Tālib said to him, ‘I recited to you, “Say: He is Allah, One,” and you told me, “This is not created.”’

He said to him, ‘Then why did you report that I said, “My utterance of the Quran is uncreated”? I have heard that you put this in your book and wrote to some people about it. If it is in your book, erase it completely, and write to those people telling them that I did not say this.’ He became angry, turned towards him, and said, ‘Are you attributing to me something I never said to you?’ Fawrān began making excuses to him, and he left his presence terrified. Abū Tālib later returned and explained that he had scraped the statement out of his book and written to those people, informing them that he had mistakenly attributed this statement to Abū ‘Abd Allāh.”

Al-Fadl ibn Ziyād said:

“Al-Bustī and I were with Abū Tālib. He brought out his book for us, having crossed out the passage, and said, ‘The mistake was mine, and I seek Allah’s forgiveness. I merely recited the Quran to Abū ‘Abd Allāh, and he said, “This is uncreated.” The misunderstanding was mine, Abū al-‘Abbās.’”

Al-Khallāl said in The Sunnah:

“Al-Marwazī related to us: Abū ‘Abd Allāh said to me, ‘This has filled my heart with anger against Ibn Shaddād.’ I asked, ‘What did he report from you?’ He replied, ‘He attributed a statement to me concerning utterance of the Quran.’

“Word reached Ibn Shaddād that Abū ‘Abd Allāh had repudiated his report. Hamdūn ibn Shaddād then came to us with a sheet containing several questions and answers. I took it in to Abū ‘Abd Allāh. He examined it and found, among the other matters it contained, the statement, ‘My utterance of the Quran is uncreated.’ Abū ‘Abd Allāh said, ‘It contains words I never uttered.’ Then he rose from the entrance passage and went inside
