Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Satan, the accursed,” up to His words:

“When We substitute one verse for another—and Allah knows best what He sends down—they say, ‘You are only a fabricator.’ Rather, most of them do not know.”

“Say: ‘The Holy Spirit has brought it down from your Lord in truth, to strengthen those who believe, and as guidance and glad tidings for the Muslims.’”

“We certainly know that they say, ‘It is only a human being who teaches him.’ The language of the one they refer to is foreign, while this is clear Arabic speech.”

Some of the polytheists claimed that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, had learned it from one of the non-Arabs in Mecca—either a slave of Ibn al-Hadramī or someone else—as the Quran commentators have mentioned. Thus, the Most High said:

“The language of the one to whom they refer”—that is, the one to whom they attribute the teaching—is a language that is “foreign, while this is clear Arabic speech.”

How, then, could a non-Arab have taught him this when this speech is Arabic? Allah has also stated that the Holy Spirit brought it down from your Lord in truth. This makes clear that the Prophet did not originate the letters and composition of this Arabic Quran, which he learned from another. For, had he done so, it would have been possible for him to have received its meanings from the non-Arab and composed its wording himself. The statement that the Holy Spirit brought down from your Lord in truth what he learned from another demonstrates that the entire Quran was sent down from the Lord, glorified and exalted is He. He did not send down its meanings without its letters.

It is well known that someone who conveys another’s speech—such as someone who conveys the speech of the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, or that of another person—or recites another’s poetry, as when a reciter recites the words of Labīd:
