Shihāb al-Dīn al-Mizzī related to me from Sharaf al-Dīn, son of Shaykh Najm al-Dīn Ibn al-Hakīm, who reported that his father said:
“I arrived in Damascus just as Ibn Arabī died. I saw his funeral bier, and it looked as though ashes had been scattered over it. I saw that it did not resemble the funeral biers of the friends of Allah”—or he said—“Then I knew that this…”—or words to that effect.
He also related through his father that Shaykh Ismāʿīl al-Kūrānī used to say:
“Ibn Arabī is a devil.”
It was also related from him that he used to say of al-Harīrī, “He is a devil.”
Shihāb al-Dīn related to me from Judge Sharaf al-Dīn al-Bāzīlī that his father used to forbid him from engaging with the teachings of Ibn Arabī, Ibn al-Fārid, and Ibn Sabʿīn.
