Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

The imam and eminent, discerning scholar Abū al-Abbās Ahmad ibn Taymiyyah—may Allah Most High have mercy on him and be pleased with him—also said:

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of all worlds. May Allah bless our master Muhammad, his family, and all his Companions.

To proceed: this is “A Section on the Sending Down of the Quran” and on the term “descent” wherever it occurs in the Book of Allah Most High. Many people have interpreted descent in certain passages of the Quran as meaning something other than its familiar meaning, because its meaning in those passages was unclear to them. This has then served as an argument for those who interpret the sending down of the Quran according to the interpretation of the people of religious innovation.

Some of the Jahmiyyah say that “He sent down” means “He created,” as in His saying, Most High:

“And We sent down iron, wherein is great military might.”

Or they say: “He created it in a high place, then sent it down from that place.”
