Majmu' al-FatawaIbn Taimiya

Then some of them said:

“Regarding the attributes, people either affirm them and hold them to be multiple, or deny them. Affirming them while holding them to be one and the same, however, contradicts the consensus.”

This is the approach of al-Qādī Abū Bakr, Abū al-Ma'ālī, and others. Others, such as Abū al-Hasan al-Āmidī, acknowledged that they had no answer to this objection.

“The point here” is that this verse demonstrates the falsity of this position, just as it demonstrates the falsity of others. His words,

“Say, ‘The Holy Spirit has brought it down from your Lord in truth,’”

entail that the Quran was sent down from his Lord. The name “Quran” denotes the Arabic Quran, both its wording and its meaning, as indicated by His words:

“So when you recite the Quran”.

One recites the Arabic Quran, not its meanings in isolation.

Furthermore, the object pronoun “it” in His words “has brought it down” refers back to “what” in His words:

“Allah knows best what He sends down.”

Thus, what Allah sent down is what the Holy Spirit brought down. If the Holy Spirit brought down the Arabic Quran, it necessarily follows that he brought it down from Allah. Hence, he cannot have brought any part of it down from a created entity, nor from himself.

Moreover, immediately after this verse, He said:

“We certainly know that they say, ‘It is only a human being who teaches him.’ The language of the one they refer to is foreign, whereas this is clear Arabic.”

They were saying that a human being taught him this Arabic Quran; they were not saying that a human being taught him only its meanings. This is indicated by His words:

“The language of the one they refer to is foreign, whereas this is clear Arabic.”

For Allah Most High refuted the disbelievers’ claim by pointing out that
