these people, in their original state, may believe in Allah and the Last Day and do righteous deeds; such people shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve. As Allah Most High said:

“Indeed, those who believed, the Jews, the Christians and the Sabians—whoever believed in Allah and the Last Day and did righteous deeds—will have their reward with their Lord, and no fear shall be upon them, nor shall they grieve.”

A similar verse appears in Sūrat al-Mā’idah.

Among them are those who made distinctions, believing in some and disbelieving in others, as Allah Most High said concerning the Jews:

“When they are told, ‘Believe in what Allah has revealed,’ they say, ‘We believe in what was revealed to us,’ yet they disbelieve in what came after it”—and the following verses.

Allah Most High said:

“Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allah and His messengers, wish to make a distinction between Allah and His messengers, say, ‘We believe in some and disbelieve in others,’ and wish to pursue a way between the two—it is they who are truly disbelievers”—to the end of the verse.

Allah Most High said:

“Say, ‘We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us, and what was revealed to Abraham and Ishmael’”—this verse and the next.

He said concerning the believers:

“The Messenger believes in what has been revealed to him from his Lord, as do the believers. All believe in Allah, His angels, His Books and His messengers: ‘We make no distinction between any of His messengers.’”

He also said:

“He has ordained for you of religion what He enjoined upon Noah, what We have revealed to you, and what We enjoined upon Abraham, Moses and Jesus: ‘Uphold the religion and do not become divided over it.’”

He condemned those who became divided and differed concerning the Scriptures. These are the people who believe in some parts but not others, so that one group holds to some parts and another group to others, as in His saying:
