cool and safe for him, just as happened to Abraham, Allah’s close friend (may Allah’s blessings be upon him). This was accompanied by his prayer, remembrance of Allah, and supplication to Him, with tranquility and dignity.

For those who experience satanic states, however, the fire does not become cool and safe. Rather, they may extinguish it just as other people do, while their minds are confused, their devils are agitated, and their voices are raised. This is assuming that any of them actually experiences a satanic state. Many of them experience no such thing; instead, they resort to deception and trickery, using talc, frog fat, and various preparations.

They also perform tricks of the kind practiced by conjurers, such as concealing labdanum and sugar in one of their hands. They are of two kinds: their elite experience satanic states, while their rank and file engage in deceitful trickery.

None of these people is to be given zakat until he repents and commits himself to the Book and Sunnah with which Allah sent Muhammad (may Allah bless him and grant him peace). In addition, he must be among those entitled to zakat who are mentioned in the words of Allah Most High:

“Zakat is only for the poor and the needy, those employed to administer it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, for freeing slaves, those in debt, for Allah’s cause, and the stranded traveler.”

As for someone who is wealthy and does not belong to these categories, he is not to be given zakat—especially if, besides being wealthy, he is one of the shaykhs of misguidance, such as the shaykhs of the wealthy who lead others astray
