a person protected by a covenant without lawful cause will not smell the fragrance of Paradise, although its fragrance can be detected from a distance of forty years’ journey.”
Likewise, his saying recorded in the Sahīh:
“No one who has an atom’s weight of arrogance in his heart will enter Paradise.”
He was asked, “O Messenger of Allah, a man likes his clothes and shoes to look fine. Is that arrogance?”
He replied, “No. Arrogance is rejecting the truth and despising people.”
“Rejecting the truth” means denying it, and “despising people” means holding them in contempt and looking down on them.
Likewise, his saying in an authentic hadith:
“There are three whom Allah will neither speak to nor purify on the Day of Resurrection, and theirs will be a painful punishment: an elderly adulterer, a lying king, and an arrogant poor man.”
The Quran contains many verses warning of punishment, such as His saying:
“Indeed, those who unjustly consume the wealth of orphans are only consuming fire into their bellies, and they will burn in a blazing Fire.”
Likewise, His saying:
“Do not consume one another’s wealth unjustly, but only through trade by mutual consent. And do not kill yourselves. Indeed, Allah is ever Merciful to you.”
“And whoever does that in aggression and injustice—We will cast him into a Fire. And that is easy for Allah.”
And His saying concerning the prescribed shares of inheritance:
“These are the limits set by Allah. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, He will admit them to gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever. That is the great triumph.”
“And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger and transgresses His limits, He will admit him to a Fire, abiding therein forever, and he will have a humiliating punishment.”
