in their hearts at the remembrance of Allah and the truth that has been revealed?”
Allah Most High says:
“Had Allah known any good in them, He would have made them hear. But even if He had made them hear, they would have turned away in aversion.”
Allah Most High says:
“So the intercession of intercessors will not benefit them.”
“What is the matter with them, turning away from the reminder,”
“Like startled wild donkeys,”
“Fleeing from a lion?”
Allah Most High says:
“Who does greater wrong than someone who is reminded of his Lord’s verses, yet turns away from them and forgets what his own hands have done?”
Allah Most High says:
“When guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will neither go astray nor suffer misery.”
“But whoever turns away from My remembrance will have a life of hardship, and We will raise him blind on the Day of Resurrection.”
“He will say, ‘My Lord, why have You raised me blind when I used to see?’”
“He will say, ‘Just as Our signs came to you and you forgot them, so today you will be forgotten.’”
There are many passages like these in the Quran, commanding people to follow the Book and wisdom with which Allah sent His Messenger, and commanding them to listen to them.
Allah Most High has prescribed this listening for Muslims in the Maghrib, ‘Ishā’ and Fajr prayers. Allah Most High says:
“And the recitation at dawn; indeed, the recitation at dawn is witnessed.”
It was for this that ‘Abd Allāh ibn Rawāha praised the Prophet, saying:
Among us is Allah’s Messenger, reciting His Book,
When dawn’s clear light breaks forth.
He spends the night keeping his side away from his bed,
While disbelievers lie sunk in theirs.
