He was asked:
A man remains secluded in his house, neither going out nor coming in. He prays at home and does not attend congregational prayers. When he goes out for Friday prayer, he covers his face. He also contrives bouts of shouting for no reason, and men and women gather around him. Should he be left as he is, or must his conduct be denounced?
He answered:
This way is an innovation, contrary to the Quran, the Sunnah, and the consensus of the Muslims. Allah Most High is to be worshipped only through what He has prescribed, not through innovations.
Allah Most High says:
“Or do they have partners who have ordained for them a religion which Allah has not permitted?”
Abandoning Friday and congregational prayers as an act of worship, believing that abstaining from them is unconditionally better than attending them, constitutes disbelief. Anyone who does this must be called upon to repent of it; unless he repents, he is to be put to death. For it is necessarily known in Islam that Allah is not worshipped by abandoning Friday and congregational prayers, but rather by performing them. Whoever makes withdrawal from these prayers a religious practice does not follow the religion of the Muslims. Rather, he resembles the monks who seclude themselves in hermitages and monasteries.
One such person may attain a kind of unveiling through ascetic discipline or through devils—by being brought close to them or otherwise. This does not benefit him; rather, he is a disbeliever in Allah and His Messenger Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. Allah Most High has commanded His creatures to worship Him alone, associating nothing with Him
