He was asked:
Concerning someone who says, “Listening to music is unlawful for others but lawful for me”: does this make him defiantly sinful or not?
He replied—may Allah be pleased with him:
Anyone who claims that universally prohibited acts—such as indecencies, injustice, and musical amusements—are unlawful for others but lawful for him must be called upon to repent. If he repents, well and good; otherwise, he is to be put to death.
Anyone who claims that frame drums and flutes are unlawful for some people but not others contradicts the Sunnah, scholarly consensus, and the leading scholars of the religion. He is among those who have gone astray. Thus, whoever persists in such a claim is defiantly sinful. And Allah knows best.
