“Or do they have partners who have prescribed for them a religion that Allah has not authorized?”
The Most High also says:
“When they commit an indecency, they say, ‘We found our fathers doing it, and Allah has commanded us to do it.’ Say, ‘Allah does not command indecency. Do you say about Allah what you do not know?’”
“Say, ‘My Lord has commanded justice. Direct your faces toward Him at every place of worship, and call upon Him, devoting your worship sincerely to Him.’”
Many people, in samāʿ and other practices, engage in forbidden indecencies and things that lead to them, claiming that these reform the hearts and are therefore among the things Allah has commanded. Such people fall, to some extent, within the meaning of this verse.
The Most High says:
“Say, ‘Who has forbidden the adornment Allah has brought forth for His servants, and the good things He has provided?’ Say, ‘They are for the believers in this worldly life, and exclusively for them on the Day of Resurrection.’ Thus do We make Our signs clear for people who know.”
“Say, ‘My Lord has only forbidden indecencies, whether open or hidden; sin; unjust aggression; associating with Allah that for which He has sent down no authority; and saying about Allah what you do not know.’”
The polytheists used to forbid certain foods and garments, making this part of their religion. Some of the Companions had also resolved to embrace monasticism, so Allah Most High revealed:
“O you who believe, do not forbid the good things Allah has made lawful for you, and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not love the transgressors.”
“And eat of what Allah has provided for you, lawful and good”—to the end of the verse.
