As for the “upright monotheists”—the followers of the religion of Abraham, Allah’s intimate friend, whom Allah made a leader, and the adherents of Islam, the only religion Allah accepts from anyone, who follow the revealed law of Muhammad, the final Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace—none of them favors such singing or advocates it. These are the people of the Quran, faith, guidance, blessedness, sound judgment, light, and success; the people of spiritual knowledge, learning, certainty, sincerity, love for Allah, reliance upon Him, fear of Him, and penitent devotion to Him.

Yet some spiritual aspirants and others with a measure of love for Allah have attended such gatherings because of how the singing stirs them, unaware of its dangers and unacquainted with its consequences. Similarly, some jurists who believe in what the Messenger brought have embraced various philosophical teachings contrary to Islam, supposing them to be true and consistent with it, unaware of their dangers and unacquainted with their consequences.

Most people cannot fully realize the realities of religion in knowledge, spiritual state, speech, action, spiritual understanding, inward experience, and practical familiarity. The comprehensive guide, however, is to hold fast to the Quran and the Sunnah. For Allah sent Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with guidance and the religion of truth, so that He might cause it to prevail over all religion. And sufficient is Allah as a witness.

Allah Most High has said:

“Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favor upon you, and approved Islam for you as your religion.”

And Allah Most High has said: “And this is My path
