He also said near the beginning of al-Fusūs (The Seals), after “A Seal of Divine Wisdom in the Word of Adam” and “A Seal of Wisdom of the Soul in the Word of Seth”—having classified gifts bestowed by Allah’s command as either granted in response to a request or granted without one, and discussed the kind that is not requested, because something is Allah’s gift—until he said:
“Among these are those who know that Allah’s knowledge of them in all their states is what they were in the state of fixity of their entities before those entities came into existence. Such a person knows that the Real gives him only what his entity has imparted to Him of knowledge about him. This is what he was in his state of fixity; thus he knows whence Allah’s knowledge of him was obtained. No class among the people of Allah is higher or possesses greater unveiling than this class. They are those acquainted with the secret of divine decree, and they fall into two groups: those who know this in general and those who know it in detail.
The one who knows it in detail is higher and more complete than the one who knows it in general. He knows what has been determined concerning him in Allah’s knowledge, either through Allah informing him of the knowledge about him that his entity imparted to Him, or through His unveiling to him his fixed entity and the succession of its states without end. The latter is higher, for his knowledge of himself is on the same level as Allah’s knowledge of him, since both draw from a single source. On the servant’s part, however, this is a favour from Allah already granted to him, itself among the states of his entity. The possessor of this unveiling knows it when Allah discloses this to him—that is, the states of his entity. For when Allah discloses to a created being the states of his fixed entity—upon which the form of existence falls—it is not within that being’s capacity, in this state, to perceive the Real’s knowledge of these fixed entities in their state of nonexistence, because they are essential relations that have no form.
